Kapamilyas help out Typhoon Ondoy victims

Donations and volunteers have been pouring in to ABS-CBN Foundation’s Sagip Kapamilya centers, accumulating a total of 100.2 million pesos worth of in-kind donations and 68.3 million pesos cash as of today.

Massive 24-hour relief operations have been launched in the two different Sagip Kapamilya centers in Examiner St. and Sct. Bayoran. To date, a total of 237,551 packs of food, water, and clothing have been released to different barangays in Marikina, Pasig, Muntinlupa, QC, Rizal, Navotas, San Juan, Pateros, Manila, Batangas, Bulacan, Laguna, Mandaluyong.

Since September 27 (Sunday), more than 6,000 volunteers have rushed in to Sagip Kapamilya to help out in the preparation, loading, and distribution of relief packs for the victims. The youth comprise most of the volunteers helping out.

"I heard from the marshals and security guards [of ABS-CBN Broadcasting] that there was a need for volunteers," said Jomari Anoñuevo, 20 years old, "So I began helping since Sunday and I’ve only had three hours of sleep since then. But I feel happy that I have volunteered. It is like helping out a kapamilya." Anoñuevo’s home in Cavite have also been flooded in high waters.

ABS-CBN artists also found the time to help out the typhoon victims. Artists like Kris Aquino, Piolo Pascual, Angel Locsin, Zanjoe Marudo, Anne Curtis, and many others volunteered their time to answer phones for the telethon as well as hand out relief goods to families in different sites.

"We still need donations in cash which are being used for mobilization and which will help in rehabilitation after the disaster," said ABS-CBN Foundation chief-of-staff Jocelyn Saw, "We also need rice, toiletries, water, items for cleaning their houses like tabo, basin, and we need a lot of goodwill."

"We are very thankful that a lot of people have come together to offer their time and services, even their vehicles," said Saw, "Sagip Kapamilya is just a conduit, all the help that we are extending are coming from the individuals and corporations who are big-hearted enough to help their kababayans."
